Two vehicles collided violently on a main road in the centre of Iași on Thursday night following a road rage incident that began in the neighbouring county. Six people were involved in the incident, with two participants requiring emergency medical care.
The impact occurred on Ion Creangă Street, in the area of the Athenaeum. Emergency crews that arrived at the scene found that one of the occupants, an 18-year-old boy, was trapped inside the car. Firefighters extracted him after he had been thrown onto the rear seat at the moment of the collision.
The young man was taken by specialists from the Mobile Intensive Care ambulance and transported urgently to hospital. Doctors found multiple injuries: haemopneumothorax in both lungs, fractures at the level of the ribs and pelvis, as well as contusions in the thoraco-abdominal region. After stabilisation, the patient was transferred to the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care section of the Thoracic Surgery Clinic, with his condition considered very serious.
The second patient, a 32-year-old individual, suffered multiple blows and chemical injuries to the eye globes. The latter appear to have resulted from the use of an aerosol with an irritating effect during the dispute between the participants.
Diana Cimpoeșu, head of the emergency admissions unit in Iași, stated that there are indications that the collision was caused deliberately. "We have information that the drivers had long-standing differences. It appears that one of them sprayed tear gas as well", the doctor explained.
Law enforcement has opened an investigation and is conducting enquiries to determine whether the accident was committed with premeditation and to identify all the circumstances that led to its occurrence.
