A 51-year-old man is suspected of stabbing a man in his seventies to death and setting fire to the flat in Rosenkälla, Nyköping. The prosecutor is awaiting forensic results in order to bring charges at the end of May.
Murder suspect taken to crime scene in Nyköping
A 51-year-old man, suspected of having stabbed a man in his seventies to death and setting fire to the flat, was taken to the crime scene in Rosenkälla in Nyköping on Friday. According to svt.se, a reconstruction was carried out in an attempt to recreate the sequence of events.
– We held an interview there to see if it could refresh the man's memory, says district prosecutor Fredrik Beijar, who is leading the preliminary investigation.
Fire discovered on 25 January
It was on 25 January this year that the rescue service was called to Rosenkälla after witnesses reported a flat fire. Inside the flat, a dead man in his seventies was found, as well as the smoke-damaged 51-year-old, who was known to the victim. He was kept sedated for a week following the incident for hospital care.
The suspect has since been held in custody and undergone a forensic psychiatric examination, which showed that he does not suffer from any serious mental disorder.
Admits but does not remember
The man does not remember much from the sequence of events, according to Beijar, but has at the same time admitted that he committed the murder. However, the admission carries little weight in the investigation.
– When it comes to such a serious crime, additional evidence is needed, such as for example a murder weapon, says Fredrik Beijar.
Police believe they have found it. Several items from the flat were sent earlier for analysis to the National Forensic Centre, NFC, including the suspected murder weapon. Beijar now reveals that it is a knife.
NFC results delayed
The hope was that the analysis results would have arrived in February, but the work has taken longer.
– The investigative situation looks good, but we have not received an answer from NFC, it takes a long time, says Beijar.
His aim is to bring charges against the man at the end of May, if NFC delivers on time.
Previously detained woman acquitted
A woman who was previously held in custody in connection with the investigation is no longer a suspect. Beijar states that police currently do not believe that any other person is involved in the murder.
