First case settlement in Caribbean Kingdom results in murder acquittal
The District Court of St Maarten has taken a historic step this week: for the first time in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, a criminal case has been resolved through case settlements, according to crimesite.nl. Notably, the result is an acquittal in a case in which exceptionally serious violence played a role.
The case, known as Togo-24, concerns the fatal shooting on 18 September 2024 in the Cay Bay neighbourhood of St Maarten. Automatic weapons were fired, one person was killed and another was wounded. In addition to the murder, the case also involves multiple attempted murder, preparation for murder and illegal weapons possession.
The investigation focused on multiple suspects and two violent criminal organisations that exchanged gunfire. However, the evidence proved complex and difficult to make conclusive, after which the defence advocate and the Public Prosecutor reached case settlements. The Court approved those settlements.
