The St. Maarten Police Force (KPSM) is investigating an assault involving a machete that took place on Thursday morning, October 8, 2026, at around 7:30 a.m. near Welfare Road in Philipsburg, 721news Sint Maarten reports.

According to preliminary information, a dispute between two men escalated until one of them produced a machete. The victim sustained serious injuries and was transferred to the Sint Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for treatment. KPSM confirmed the injuries are serious but not life-threatening.

A suspect was subsequently arrested and is being processed by police as the investigation continues.

KPSM used the incident to issue a public reminder against vigilante action and urge residents to settle disputes peacefully. "Resorting to violence can have serious and long-lasting consequences, not only for those directly involved but also for their families and the wider community," the force stated.

The police urged members of the public to seek assistance from the appropriate authorities when conflicts arise, rather than allowing disagreements to turn violent.
