Police constable held after allegedly handing shooting footage to Mohamed for $800,000
A 20-year-old police constable attached to the Guyana Police Force's Command Centre has been arrested after allegedly accepting $800,000 in cash from Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed in exchange for surveillance footage connected to a shooting outside the home of Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, Kaieteur News reports.
According to a police press statement, investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters detained the constable on Monday, 26th October, 2026, following intelligence received by the department.
The constable admitted to investigators that while on duty on Friday, 23rd October, he had discreetly downloaded surveillance footage related to the shooting incident and saved it onto a flash drive, allegedly at Mohamed's direction.
The following day, Saturday 24th October, Mohamed reportedly sent an employee to collect the constable and bring him to Mohamed's residence at Houston, East Bank Demerara. There, Mohamed allegedly offered the rank $800,000 in return for the recording, paid the amount in cash, and took possession of the flash drive.
The constable subsequently disclosed that he spent a portion of the money on a shopping trip and handed the remainder to his mother. Detectives are now working to recover the funds, and investigations into several alleged offences remain ongoing.
Contacted for comment, Mohamed denied wrongdoing and defended his actions. "I will protect my sources at all cost," he said, adding that he had already stated the footage came from a contact within Special Branch. Mohamed also questioned the direction of the investigation: "I am happy the police are confirming this video is real and not an AI video like Minister Kwame McCoy stated. Why are they going after the constable and not the shooter? Why isn't Prem Narine on close arrest?"
