Murder charge filed against Kanand Ojha, 11 years after Georgetown shooting

Kanand Ojha, deported from the US last week, was charged Monday with the 2015 murder of Nephi Noel Luther in Georgetown and remanded to prison.

Kanand Ojha appeared before Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates' Court on Monday, where he was formally charged with the murder of Noel "Nephi" Luther — more than eleven years after the fatal shooting, newsroom.gy reports.

Ojha was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to October 12, 2026.

Luther, described as a sex worker, was shot once to the chest at approximately 2:35am on July 22, 2015, at the corner of Carmichael and Quamina Streets in Georgetown. He was later pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Police alleged the incident arose from a dispute involving a client who had returned to the area with Ojha.

Ojha had been wanted in connection with Luther's death for years. A wanted bulletin was issued in July 2019. He was eventually arrested in Queens, New York, in September 2025 by the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, which comprises US Marshals and other American law enforcement agencies.

He was deported to Guyana on September 18, 2026, following coordination between Guyanese and US law enforcement authorities. Ranks of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters arrested him three days later, on the Friday before his court appearance.

A second man linked to Luther's killing, Ron "Andel" Forde, had previously pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter and was sentenced to 20 years in prison in June 2017.

The charge against Ojha is an allegation; he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
