A 36-year-old Athlone man accused of punching a woman in the face, causing her to lose two teeth, will face trial at the Circuit Court rather than the District Court, westmeathindependent.ie reports.

Keith Grehan, with an address at Beechville, Athlone, appeared before Athlone District Court on Wednesday, 9 September, facing charges of threats to kill and assault causing harm to a woman on Central Terrace, Northgate Street, Athlone, on 5 October 2024.

The court was told that at 10.41pm on that date, Gardaí received a report of an altercation between a man and a woman on Northgate Street. It is alleged that the woman walked away from Grehan, who then followed her, pushed her, and struck her in the face, knocking out a number of her teeth.

Garda evidence, as outlined to the court, indicated that Grehan was cautioned and arrested at the scene. An ambulance was called for the injured woman, who had lost two teeth and was assessed for a possible fracture to her jaw.

Judge Cronin reviewed several medical reports and photographs of the injured party before determining the case was unsuitable for summary disposal at district level and declined jurisdiction. The matter will proceed to the Circuit Court.

Grehan was remanded on continuing bail and is due to reappear on 7 October for further directions.
