Dublin man remanded in custody for alleged assault on TD Michael Healy-Rae

A 51-year-old Dublin man has been charged with assaulting Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae on Cork Street, leaving him with a cut requiring seven stitches.

A 51-year-old Dublin man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with assaulting Independent Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae, shannonside.ie reports.

Anthony Foley, of Rosary Road, Maryland, Dublin 8, faces one count of assault causing harm following an incident on Cork Street in Dublin city on Wednesday. Healy-Rae required seven stitches to a cut on his lip after being struck in the face.

The court heard that CCTV footage from the Cork Street area shows the accused shouting "ah bucko you're in the wrong area get out of here you f- snake" before approaching the driver's side of Healy-Rae's car, punching the TD and fleeing the scene.

Gardaí arrested Foley the following day after he was allegedly spotted in the same area, wearing the same clothes and walking a dog. He made no reply when charged.

Garda Paul Nolan described the attack as a "violent, unprovoked attack in broad daylight" and indicated there is a suggestion it may have been politically motivated.

The defence told the court that Foley was shown the CCTV footage during his interview and maintained to Gardaí that it was not him.

An application for bail was refused, and Foley was remanded in custody to return before the court on Tuesday.
