€1.2m cocaine haul intercepted at Cork Airport after Portugal flight

The Irish Times reports that customs officers at Cork Airport seized €1.2 million worth of cocaine from a man in his 30s who had just disembarked from a flight arriving from Portugal.

The man was stopped during routine profiling. Ten packets of cocaine, with a combined weight of 12kg, were discovered concealed inside a suitcase he had retrieved from the luggage carousel.

Gardaí were alerted and the man — originally from Blanchardstown, who had flown to Portugal from Belfast — was arrested and brought to Togher Garda station for questioning.

He is being detained under drug-trafficking legislation, which permits gardaí to hold suspects for up to seven days.

Revenue confirmed the seizure forms part of its continuing operations targeting organised crime groups involved in the importation, sale and supply of illegal drugs.

The agency urged anyone with information on drug smuggling to contact its confidential line on 1800-295-295.
