Kilkenny families are being threatened, assaulted and having property destroyed by drug dealers pursuing debt repayments, a local TD has said.

Kilkenny families targeted over drug debts as TD calls for crackdown
Families in Kilkenny are living in fear as criminal networks threaten and intimidate them over the drug debts of relatives, kilkennypeople.ie reports. Homes have been vandalised, cars set alight, and individuals confronted at their workplaces, according to Kilkenny TD Deputy John McGuinness.
"Drug use and the availability of drugs is at a crisis point in Kilkenny — no community is spared or safe," Deputy McGuinness said. He described a pattern in which threats from suppliers escalate when payments are delayed or debts accumulate, leading to intimidation, serious property damage, and physical assaults.
"Innocent family members and associates are targeted and their lives are made a living hell," he said. "They are told to pay up or suffer the consequences, which can be horrific."
McGuinness said that out of fear, families are placing their lives on hold and handing over large sums of money to criminal networks. He called on authorities to replicate at national level the successes already achieved by gardaí in dismantling drug operations internationally. "Root out the criminals, their associates, their mules and destroy their networks," he urged.
Kilkenny gardaí confirmed that drugs-related intimidation is an established tactic used by dealers and criminal networks to shield their operations and instil fear in communities. A senior Kilkenny-based garda spokesperson said the force has responded robustly and achieved notable results.
"We have had a number of successful prosecutions in Kilkenny related to false imprisonment, money laundering and assaults, all of which were reported as a result of drugs-related prosecution," the spokesperson said.
The garda acknowledged the difficulty the intimidation poses for victims and stressed that formal complaints are not required for gardaí to provide support. "We can meet people informally and discreetly and help and advise them as best we can," the spokesperson said. "Every case, conversation and report is handled sensitively and in confidence."
The senior garda also addressed recreational drug users directly, stating that even infrequent personal use contributes to the broader cycle of criminality, intimidation, and violence being inflicted on innocent people across the city and county.
