Glass assault charge in Galway city: CCTV footage shown in court

Galway man charged with glass assault after Cross Street incident caught on camera

Connacht Tribune reports that a judge at Galway District Court has described CCTV footage of an alleged glass assault as "very informative", after viewing a three-minute clip recorded on Cross Street in Galway City.

Sam Glynn, aged 23, with an address at Cloonfane, Garrafrauns, Dunmore, faces two charges arising from an incident on 16 March 2025. He is charged with producing a glass in a manner likely to unlawfully intimidate another person and capable of inflicting serious injury, while also committing an assault causing harm — an offence contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Sergeant Claire Heneghan told the court last week that the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the case be dealt with by way of summary disposal in the District Court, but only on a plea of guilty.

Sergeant Sean McHugh played the CCTV clip, taken from a camera on Cross Street, which it is alleged shows Glynn throwing a glass at the injured party. A pool of blood is visible in the footage. Sgt Heneghan noted that the injured party did not cooperate with the investigation; however, the incident was observed directly by two gardaí, and Glynn was prosecuted on that basis.

Judge Fiona Lydon indicated the court wished to view the footage before any further steps were taken. Defence solicitor Jack Donohue said he was not in a position to indicate his client's attitude to the charges but raised no objection to the footage being shown.

Following the viewing, Judge Lydon said the footage would serve as guidance for how the case proceeds, should it remain at District Court level.

Donohue told the court that his colleague, solicitor Martina Moran, has written to the State regarding a proposal from the defence team but has yet to receive a response.

Judge Lydon remanded Glynn on bail to appear before the court again on 23 November for an update on the matter.
