Google News IE — Crime (en) reports that Richard O'Connell (49), of Claí Mór, Monivea Road, appeared before Galway District Court after taking up High Court bail in connection with an alleged hurley attack at Wellpark Retail Park Shopping Centre.

O'Connell faces two charges arising from the incident on 22 June: assault causing harm, contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, and possession of a hurley with intent to injure, contrary to Section 9(5) of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.

At his first court appearance, O'Connell had been remanded in custody and was not legally represented. The State objected to bail at that stage. Garda Edward Harty told the court it will be alleged that at approximately 8.37pm on 22 June, the accused used a hurley to attack another man, causing "multiple breaks to his wrist." The assault is alleged to have been "unprovoked" in nature.

Having since secured High Court bail, O'Connell returned to Galway District Court and was remanded on continuing bail. Sergeant Claire Heneghan requested the case be adjourned to 7 October.

The court heard that a conviction for assault causing harm at District Court level carries a maximum sentence of twelve months in prison, while a conviction in the Circuit Court carries a maximum of five years.
