Death in custody at Kildare Garda Station prompts ombudsman inquiry

A man in his 30s died while in garda custody at Kildare Garda Station at approximately 9.35am on 31 October, dublinlive.ie reports. Officers found him unresponsive and administered medical assistance at the scene, a garda spokesperson confirmed. He was declared dead shortly afterwards.

The garda watchdog, Fiosrú — the Office of the Police Ombudsman — has opened an independent investigation into the death. Investigators from the ombudsman's office visited the station, and an inquiry is under way.

A garda spokesperson stated: "As required by Section 203 of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024, the incident has been referred to Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman. No further information is available at this time."

Fiosrú examines incidents involving members of the public who have died or sustained serious injuries in circumstances connected to garda interaction. A referral does not automatically indicate that any officer has been accused of misconduct; it means the ombudsman must independently establish whether the action or inaction of gardaí may have contributed to the death or to significant harm to an individual.

The Office of the State Pathologist has been informed of the death.
