Offaly man faces court over undisclosed archaeological finds from Tyrrellspass

A Tullamore District Court hearing has been set for November 2 for Sean Mangan, 72, charged with possessing archaeological objects under the National Monuments Act.

A court hearing has been set for November 2 in Tullamore District Court in connection with charges brought against a Westmeath man under the National Monuments Act, offalyexpress.ie reports.

Sean Mangan (72), of Knockmore, Tyrrellspass, is alleged to have had a number of archaeological objects in his possession or under his control at Knockmore on 9 June last year.

The charges include possession or control of up to four copper alloy buckles, silver coin fragments, penannular brooches, a copper alloy seal matrix — on two separate counts — and harness mounts or pendants.

It is further alleged that Mangan failed to report the objects, said to have been found within the state, to the Director of the National Museum of Ireland, as required by law.

Brian Duffy, solicitor for Mangan, told Tullamore District Court that a hearing would be needed and estimated the matter could take half a day. Sergeant Brendan Kearns, court presenter, confirmed that witnesses from the National Museum of Ireland are expected to attend.

The case had previously come before the court in June, when Judge Andrew Cody was informed that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed it could be dealt with summarily, allowing it to remain in the District Court. An order for disclosure of prosecution evidence to Mr Duffy was also made at that point.

Judge Cody scheduled the full hearing for 2 November.
