Roscommon Garda Drug Unit seizes over €2m in controlled substances

A multi-agency operation in July netted more than €2m in drugs involving Roscommon Garda's drug unit. A separate Dublin Port seizure pushed the combined total beyond €9.84m.

Google News IE — Crime (en) reports that the Roscommon Garda Drug Unit participated in a multi-agency operation during July that resulted in the seizure of more than €2m worth of controlled drugs, according to a parliamentary exchange.

Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration Jim O'Callaghan confirmed the operation involved personnel from the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, Revenue, and drug units based in Roscommon, Longford, Mayo, Kildare, and Drogheda.

In a written answer to Louth Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú on 28 July, O'Callaghan said a separate joint Garda and Revenue operation at Dublin Port had resulted in the seizure of cannabis with an estimated value of €7.84m. The combined value of drugs seized across both operations exceeded €9.84m.

O'Callaghan said An Garda Síochána continues to implement Operation Tara, its enhanced national anti-drugs strategy, which targets trafficking networks at international, national, and local level — covering importation, distribution, cultivation, production, sale, and supply of controlled drugs.

The Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau leads efforts against drug trafficking, with inter-agency and international co-operation described by the minister as central to the overall response.

O'Callaghan also noted that drug-related intimidation remains a high priority. Garda inspectors are available nationwide through the Drugs Related Intimidation Reporting Programme to support victims.
