Google News IE — Crime (en) reports that three teenage boys appeared before a special sitting of Clonakilty District Court on Tuesday, charged in connection with an incident in which a garda car was allegedly rammed by a stolen BMW X5.
Wayne Daly (19), of Farm Lawn, Lehenaghbeg, Cork, and two 14-year-old boys who cannot be named due to their age, faced charges of allowing themselves to be carried in a stolen vehicle at Ballinaboy, Ballinhassig, on 25 August.
The BMW X5 was allegedly stolen from Rochestown in Cork city. Gardaí attempted to stop the vehicle in the Belgooly area near Kinsale and deployed a stinger device to bring it to a halt.
Det Gda Neil Ryan gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in relation to Daly, and confirmed he made no reply when charged.
Daly, who was without legal representation, told Judge Brendan O'Reilly he had been in contact with a solicitor prior to the sitting. Gardaí objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the charge.
Taking to the witness box, Daly requested bail and told the court: "I can promise that nothing is going to happen again." He said he had just secured employment and wanted to move on, having previously associated with the "wrong people."
He was remanded in custody to 27 August, with consent to bail under strict conditions — including a curfew, daily signing-on at a garda station, and a requirement to stay out of West Cork. Daly told the court he did not have the funds to meet his own bond of €100, nor anyone to provide an independent surety of €1,000.
The two 14-year-olds, who appeared accompanied by their parents, also lacked legal representation. Gardaí did not oppose bail for the juveniles, who are due back before the court on 11 September.
Judge O'Reilly granted bail to both youths under strict conditions: good behaviour, residence at their respective family homes, daily sign-on at their local garda station, and a ban on entering West Cork. The judge further directed that each provide gardaí with a contact phone number, keeping the device charged and topped up, and that they attend school in full each day.
Judge O'Reilly issued a direct warning to both: "If you breach that aspect of the bail, you are heading straight to Oberstown."
