Clonakilty District Court hears charges over stolen car collision with garda
Two 14-year-old boys and a 19-year-old man have appeared before a special sitting of Clonakilty District Court after a stolen car struck a garda vehicle near Ballinhassig in Co Cork in the early hours of Monday morning, RTÉ News reports.
Wayne Daly, aged 19, of Farm Lawn, Manor Farm, Lehenaghmore, Cork, along with two juveniles who cannot be named due to their age, each face a charge of allowing themselves to be carried in a vehicle taken without the owner's consent or lawful authority, contrary to the Road Traffic Act 1961.
Gardaí opposed bail for Daly, with Detective Garda Neil Ryan telling the court that Daly made no reply when charged and was considered likely to reoffend if released. Judge Brendan O'Reilly granted bail on condition of a €300 cash bond and an independent surety of €1,000. Daly was unable to meet the required amount immediately and was remanded in custody with consent to bail. He is due back before Clonakilty District Court on Thursday for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The two juveniles, who appeared alongside their parents, were granted bail after the court heard they had no prior convictions and had not previously been subject to a bench warrant. Each was released on a €100 cash bond, subject to conditions requiring good behaviour, residence at their home address, daily school attendance, daily signing on at a garda station, and observance of a 10pm to 6am curfew.
Both were also ordered to stay out of West Cork and remain contactable by phone. They are due before Bandon District Court on 11 September for directions from the DPP.
Two additional youths arrested in connection with the incident have not yet appeared before the courts.
