A 19-year-old cyclist died after a van struck him and fled in Nugentstown, Kells, Co Meath. Gardaí have recovered the van and are appealing for witnesses.

A 19-year-old man has died following a hit-and-run collision involving a van and a bicycle in Nugentstown, Kells, Co Meath, TheJournal.ie reports. The incident occurred at approximately 8.05pm on Tuesday. The van did not remain at the scene, where the cyclist was pronounced dead.

Gardaí have since recovered the van. It is believed the driver has been interviewed by gardaí at Kells Garda Station.

The deceased has been named locally as TJ McDonnell from Durhamstown, Bohermeen, Co Meath. He is survived by his parents Paul and Aishling, brothers Ryan and Paul Jr, and sisters Katie and Hollie-Rose. No funeral arrangements have been confirmed.

Club mourns a key part of its community

His local football club, Bohermeen Celtic FC, described TJ as "a huge part of the Bohermeen Celtic family." The club said his involvement began at Under-8 level and continued through the age groups to Youths and Senior football. "Throughout those years, TJ made countless memories, friendships and connections that will remain part of the fabric of our club," the statement read.

The club noted that his contribution extended beyond playing. TJ was part of the academy coaching group, giving his time and knowledge to help younger players develop. "He was hugely popular with the academy kids, who looked up to him and loved having TJ around the club," the club said. "His natural warmth, patience and ability to connect with young players were clear for all to see."

Dunboyne College of Further Education, where TJ studied, described him as a "bright, well-mannered student who was a pleasure to teach." Locals also added their tributes, with one describing him as the "friendliest and well-mannered young man you could ever meet."

Gardaí appeal for witnesses and dash cam footage

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was travelling in the Nugentstown area of Kells on Tuesday between 7.30pm and 8.30pm to come forward, particularly those who may have captured dash cam or mobile phone footage of the incident or the surrounding area.
