Two arrested after stinger device stops stolen car chase in Limerick

A man and a woman, both in their 30s, have been charged following a garda pursuit of a stolen car through Limerick City on Tuesday, 25th August 2026, Google News IE — Crime (en) reports.

The vehicle at the centre of the incident — a blue-green Toyota Corolla belonging to Fr Dick Browne of Cappamore — was taken from outside his parochial house earlier that afternoon.

Gardaí were alerted after a post appeared on the Cappamore Tidy Towns Facebook page. "Fr Browne's car was stolen from outside his house this afternoon, please share this post with your Facebook friends, its a blue green Toyota Corolla," the post read.

Officers pursued the vehicle through Limerick City before bringing it to a halt at Prospect, on the outskirts of the city centre, at approximately 6.35pm. A stinger device — used to deflate a vehicle's tyres — had been placed across the road.

A garda spokesman confirmed the sequence of events. "On the evening of Tuesday 25th August 2026, a vehicle failed to stop when directed to do so by Gardaí. The vehicle fled the scene and subsequently came to a stop in Prospect, Limerick, at approximately 6.35pm. A stinger device had been placed across the road."

"A man and woman aged in their 30s were arrested at the scene. They are scheduled to appear before the courts at a later date," the spokesman added.

Video footage of the pursuit was shared on social media in the hours following the incident.

Gardaí described the operation as a "managed containment operation." The recovered vehicle had been reported as an unauthorised taking earlier that day. Investigations are ongoing and, as the matter is now before the courts, gardaí said they would not be commenting further.
