Police warn against misinformation after Dundee girl charged over weapons footage
A 12-year-old girl has been charged with possession of offensive weapons following an incident in St Ann Lane, Lochee, Dundee, bbc.com reports. Footage of the confrontation circulated widely on social media, prompting widespread speculation over the ethnicity and actions of those involved.
Police Scotland said a Bulgarian couple — a man and a woman — were approached by a group of youths at around 19:40 on Saturday. Officers confirmed the girl was subsequently charged, and that the investigation remains ongoing.
BBC News understands that police have found no evidence to support claims made online that the youths were at risk of sexual assault. The force has not arrested any other individuals and said no further suspects are being sought in connection with the incident.
Elon Musk, owner of X and Tesla, shared a post about the incident with his 225 million followers on the platform, amplifying the footage further.
Police Scotland initially described the girl as 14 years old before issuing a correction, confirming her age as 12.
Chief Superintendent Nicola Russell said: "We would like to thank the local community for their help with our investigation and would urge the public not to share misinformation about this incident or speculate on the circumstances."
The force stressed that online speculation risks distorting public understanding of events still under active investigation.
