Emergency services were called to an address on Overnhill Road in Downend, near Bristol, shortly after 01:45 BST on Sunday. Jill Billett, 69, was found with serious injuries and taken to hospital, where she died a few hours later.

Geoffrey Billett was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with her murder. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Bristol Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Avon and Somerset Police said their "thoughts are with the family" of Jill Billett, who are being supported by specially trained officers.

The force added that increased police presence could be expected in the area over the coming days, both to reassure the local community and as part of the ongoing investigation.
