Greenwich teenager sentenced to four years for gunpoint car robbery
A 19-year-old from Greenwich has been jailed for four years after attempting to steal a £72,500 Porsche Cayenne at gunpoint from a seller in Southwark, the Evening Standard reports.
Fawaz Oyedeji arranged to view the Porsche Cayenne SUV after finding it listed for sale online. He met the owner at their home on Tuesday, 18 March, posing as a prospective buyer.
After being shown around the vehicle, the two men sat in the front seats to discuss the sale. Oyedeji then produced what appeared to be a firearm, pointed it at the victim, and demanded the keys. The victim fought back, and Oyedeji fled the scene on foot.
Police were called immediately and launched an investigation. Detectives traced the phone used to arrange the viewing to Oyedeji, establishing that the device had been present near both his home address and the scene of the attempted robbery. CCTV footage tracked his movements in the period immediately before and after the offence, and officers recovered clothing consistent with what the suspect had worn during the incident.
Oyedeji was arrested at his home in Leonard Robbins Path within 38 hours of the offence.
Detective Constable Alex Long, who led the investigation, said: "The victim showed immense courage by refusing to hand over his keys despite being threatened with what appeared to be a genuine firearm. Thanks to his support throughout the investigation and the diligence of officers who gathered CCTV, digital and forensic evidence, we were able to build a compelling case that led to Oyedeji's conviction and sentence."
Long also urged members of the public buying or selling vehicles privately to take precautions. "If something does not feel right, trust your instincts and leave. Always call 999 in an emergency," he said.
A jury at Inner London Crown Court returned a unanimous guilty verdict after just 26 minutes of deliberation on Wednesday, 4 November. Oyedeji was sentenced to four years' imprisonment.
