Nottinghamshire man jailed 14 years for repeated rape of vulnerable victim
Darren Wingrove, 53, of Charles Street, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault against a vulnerable woman in Nottinghamshire, chad.co.uk reports.
The offences took place on multiple occasions between January 2013 and December 2016. The investigation began after the victim disclosed the abuse to a paramedic, prompting Nottinghamshire Police detectives to open a formal inquiry.
At Nottingham Crown Court on 16 October, Wingrove was handed the 14-year custodial term. He was also made subject to an indefinite restraining order to provide further protection to the victim.
Detective Sergeant Alan Braisby, from Nottinghamshire Police's rape and serious sexual offences team, described the abuse as "predatory and degrading sexual abuse targeting an extremely vulnerable woman."
"Wingrove is a bully who believed he could conceal his offending because of the victim's vulnerabilities," Braisby said. "She, by contrast, has been both brave and resilient during interviews with police and during court proceedings."
Braisby acknowledged the case had experienced a number of unforeseen delays, but said he hoped the outcome would help the victim rebuild her life.
He also called on other survivors to come forward. "I hope the sentencing of Wingrove will further encourage other victims of rape and sexual abuse to report offenders," he said. "Our experienced officers are here to support the victims of appalling crimes like this."
