PSNI probes reported assault on Archbishop of Armagh
Police in Northern Ireland are investigating a reported assault on a member of the clergy at St Patrick's Church of Ireland Cathedral in Armagh, limerickleader.ie reports.
The incident involves Enoch Burke, a former teacher who was dismissed from Wilson's Hospital School in Co Westmeath, and Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland John McDowell.
A video circulating on social media appears to show Burke confronting Archbishop McDowell over his long-running legal dispute with the school following his dismissal.
The dispute originated in 2022, when the school's then-principal asked Burke to address a student by a new name and pronoun. Burke and his family, evangelical Christians from Co Mayo, contended the instruction was unconstitutional and violated his right to express his religious beliefs.
A spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed the investigation in a statement: "Police are investigating a report of an assault on a member of the clergy at St Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh. Police inquiries are ongoing."
