Serial motorcycle and moped thief jailed after Sussex Police investigation
Motorcyclenews.com reports that a 22-year-old serial motorcycle and moped thief has been jailed following an investigation by Sussex Police.
Ronnie Beckett pleaded guilty to nine of 11 charges at Lewes Crown Court on 24 September. He was sentenced to six and a half years in prison, with each term served concurrently, resulting in an effective custodial period of two years.
His crime spree spanned Crawley, Gatwick, Horsham and Redhill in Surrey between 13 June and 2 November 2024. On all but two occasions, thefts took place at victims' workplaces.
"We knew that Beckett had been a menace to the local community for quite some time; the difficulty was to prove it," said PC Michelle Robinson of Gatwick CID.
Beckett was linked to the offences through a combination of CCTV footage and witness statements.
Robinson said the impact on victims had been severe. "The vast majority of victims in this investigation had their vehicles stolen through no fault of their own. They were severely impacted by their inability to travel to and from their place of employment."
Police confirmed that the vast majority of stolen vehicles were recovered and returned to their owners, though many required extensive repair.
"We know how vital this form of transport is to so many people… I would encourage any victims of theft to continue to report it to us. We are here to help," Robinson added.
