Man arrested near Bulwell after cannabis deal interrupted by officer

A suspected drug dealer was arrested on Bestwood Road, between Bulwell and Bestwood Village, just before 4pm on 25 September, hucknalldispatch.co.uk reports.

PC Ford first spotted the driver when he ran a red light in front of a marked police vehicle and was ordered to stop. A strong smell of cannabis inside the car prompted the officer to ask for the driver's details — but the man fled before they could be recorded.

The suspect sped off, clipping a stationary vehicle before abandoning the car and running into woodland. PC Ford pursued him on foot through bushes and brambles, and accepted a lift from a passing driver who had spotted the suspect's direction of travel.

A second member of the public helped physically detain the suspect until further officers arrived. During the chase, police recovered a large black bag that had been discarded, containing a significant quantity of cannabis. A subsequent search warrant at the suspect's home in Bestwood uncovered thousands of pounds in cash.

The 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply cannabis, driving without due care, failing to comply with a red light, and criminal damage. He has been released on bail under strict conditions while investigators assess the scale of the operation.

Sgt Alex Piggott thanked those who intervened: "The driver and his partner who pointed our officer in the direction of the suspect and even offered him a ride, as well as the member of the public who helped us detain the suspect while other officers were on their way — for that, we are eternally grateful."

Piggott added that the force would continue pursuing those suspected of drug supply. "Drugs are a complete blight on our communities and are linked to other serious offences such as knife crime and anti-social behaviour in our neighbourhoods," he said. "This is why we will always pursue those who think they can evade the law."
