Two men charged over fatal assault on non-league footballer in Milton Keynes
Two men have been charged with the murder of Ezekiel Williams, a 26-year-old footballer who played for Hendon FC in north London, the Evening Standard reports.
Williams died in hospital on Monday after sustaining head injuries in an incident at around 2am on Sunday in Midsummer Boulevard, Milton Keynes. He had been taken to hospital following the assault but did not survive.
Thames Valley Police confirmed on Thursday night that Sameull Hussein, 28, of no fixed abode, and Arman Uddin, 21, of Saxon Road, Luton, have each been charged with one count of murder. Both men were taken into custody ahead of an appearance at Milton Keynes Magistrates' Court.
A third man, aged 30 and also from Luton, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. He has since been released on bail while the investigation continues.
Detective Inspector Rob Underhill of Thames Valley Police said the force was "continuing to support the family of Ezekiel", adding: "It is clear from tributes that have been paid that he was a hugely respected and loved person."
Williams, a Londoner, had represented several clubs during his football career, including Kettering Town FC, FC Romania, Northwood, and Harrow Borough. He joined Hendon FC in September and had been described by the club as "a humble, unassuming and generous individual with a razor-sharp wit."
In a social media post, the club said Williams "was beginning to carve a place for himself in midfield with a series of hard-working and selfless displays that summed him up as a person." Last month he scored his first goal for the club, against Jersey Bulls.
A GoFundMe page set up in his memory had raised more than £17,000 by Friday morning. The fundraiser described Williams as "a selfless man that was known for helping others whenever possible."
Thames Valley Police have asked anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to come forward.
