A man in his 60s has been arrested after a woman died from serious injuries at a property in Overnhill Road, Downend, South Gloucestershire.

A man in his 60s has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a woman of similar age in Downend, South Gloucestershire, bbc.com reports.

Emergency services were called to an address on Overnhill Road shortly after 1:45am BST on Sunday. The woman was found with serious injuries and taken to hospital, where she died several hours later. The man was arrested shortly after officers arrived at the scene.

Avon & Somerset Police Superintendent Karen Corrigan said the man remained "in police custody where he is being interviewed under caution as we seek to further our understanding of the tragic events that unfolded."

Corrigan moved to calm concerns among local residents. "We know this news will cause great shock in the local community but we would like to reassure everyone that we do not consider there to be any ongoing risk to the public," she said. "Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the woman's grieving family at this devastating time for them. A specially-trained officer will be providing them with support going forward."

A police spokesperson said residents should expect a heightened officer presence in the Downend area over the coming days, both to support the community and as part of the ongoing investigation.
