Jason A. McCallum was taken into custody on May 30 at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport after a brief chase. Madison County prosecutors filed the murder charges the following Sunday. McCallum was being held in St. Louis County pending extradition to Illinois.
Venice police initially requested state police assistance on May 26 after officers discovered a man dead inside a vehicle in the 1200 block of Selb Street. Investigators recovered 17 shell casings at the scene. Sherrod's vehicle had been struck 16 times, authorities said.
A witness reported hearing gunshots and observing a white Chevrolet Impala leaving the area at high speed. Surveillance footage from a nearby convenience store, recorded shortly before the shooting, showed McCallum carrying a firearm fitted with an extended magazine tucked into his waistband. The same white vehicle was also captured on video in the vicinity of the shooting, according to authorities.
