An 18-year-old man shot outside a Husky Ridge apartment building on West Hillcrest Drive in DeKalb has died from his injuries, Police Chief David Byrd confirmed in a Saturday update, shawlocal.com reports.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 900 block of West Hillcrest Drive at approximately 5 p.m. on Friday, 12 September. A K-9 unit also attended the scene. The victim, whose identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin, was shot outside the apartment building.
The 18-year-old was initially transported to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital before being transferred to a hospital in Rockford, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
As of Saturday afternoon, no one was in custody. "Investigation is ongoing and we are following up on several leads at this time," Byrd said Saturday.
When contacted on Sunday, Byrd said there were no new developments to report. The DeKalb County Coroner's Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
At the scene on Friday evening, at least seven squad cars were parked along the block by around 6 p.m. Officers roped off part of the parking lot and driveway with police tape and remained on scene into the night. Behind the tape, debris and evidence markers were visible on the parking lot ground.
DeKalb issued a citywide emergency alert at approximately 5:41 p.m. Friday, asking residents to avoid the area. Bystanders, including children and neighbours from nearby buildings, gathered along the street to watch the emergency response.
"We are asking the public to stay out of the area while the investigation is ongoing," Byrd said Friday.
Police appeared to be staging the emergency response behind the apartment building. The investigation was still active as of Sunday, with officers continuing to follow up on leads.
