41 car break-ins at Illinois Tech parking lot in Chicago's Bronzeville

At least 41 vehicles were broken into at an Illinois Institute of Technology parking lot in Chicago's Bronzeville neighbourhood early Saturday morning, abc7chicago.com reports, with a second wave of break-ins striking a nearby lot less than an hour later.

Chicago police said four suspects arrived in a black SUV at a campus parking lot near East 33rd Street and South State Street shortly before 2:15 a.m. The group smashed the windows of 41 vehicles before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle. Whether any property was taken from the cars was not immediately clear.

Illinois Tech confirmed the incident in a statement: "Illinois Tech Public Safety responded alongside the Chicago Police Department to reports of vehicle break-ins in a campus parking lot early Saturday morning. The university has increased patrols in campus parking areas, and we are working with affected vehicle owners directly. The safety and security of our students and campus community is always our top priority, and we are continuing to work with CPD as it investigates the incident."

At around 3:10 a.m., a separate group of three suspects in a dark-coloured Jeep SUV caused damage to at least 28 vehicles at another parking lot in the 3200 block of South King Drive, according to the Chicago Police Department. It was also unclear whether any property was removed from those vehicles.

Authorities did not immediately release further details about either incident. Area One detectives are investigating both cases.
