Actor James Handy, 81, fatally stabbed in Los Angeles home

Veteran character actor James Handy died after being attacked with a knife at his residence in Tarzana, Los Angeles. He was 81 years old.

Police responded to a 911 call on Wednesday evening around 9:30 p.m. on Erwin Street. The caller identified himself as the son of the victim's roommate and stated he had just killed the man. Officers arrived to find Handy in the front yard with a stab wound to the chest. Paramedics transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 44-year-old suspect surrendered to arriving officers and was taken into custody. He was later booked at Van Nuys jail on a murder charge, with bail set at two million dollars. Investigators believe the incident was isolated and do not consider there to be any ongoing threat to public safety.

Handy was widely recognized for his roles in major Hollywood productions. He appeared in "Top Gun: Maverick" (2022) alongside Tom Cruise, played the exterminator in the 1995 hit "Jumanji" with Robin Williams, and portrayed a doctor treating Hugh Jackman's character in "Logan" (2017). His television credits included recurring roles in series such as "Alias," "Melrose Place," and "NYPD Blue." He also appeared in films like "The Rocketeer," "Brighton Beach Memoirs," "The Verdict," and "K-9." Born in New York, he made his screen debut in 1977.
