Blair arraigned in Queens on two counts of assault

Actress Selma Blair was arrested late Sunday after allegedly injuring two Delta Air Lines flight attendants on a flight from Los Angeles to New York, cbc.ca reports. She also faces charges of assaulting a police officer and a nurse after being taken to hospital.

Blair, 54, was taken into custody at approximately 11 p.m. ET at John F. Kennedy Airport, after the Delta flight was parked at the gate. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed the arrest in a statement, noting that Blair and one of the flight attendants were transported to hospital for evaluation.

According to charging documents, a police officer transporting Blair to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center said that while she was securing Blair to a stretcher, Blair freed a leg from the restraints and kicked her repeatedly in the face, neck and chest, causing serious pain and substantial swelling. A nurse who was later moving Blair stated the actress kicked her in the chest, causing substantial pain.

Blair was arraigned on two counts of second-degree assault late Monday at a Queens court. A judge set her bail at $20,000 cash or $60,000 bond and scheduled the next hearing for January.

A representative for Blair told The Associated Press that the actress had suffered a medical emergency, which led to the alleged conduct. Details of what occurred on board the aircraft were not immediately disclosed by the airline, police, or the FBI, which is investigating the incident. Delta said in a statement it "has zero tolerance for unruly or unlawful behavior, as the safety of our customers and crew always comes first."

This is not the first time Blair has been involved in an incident on a plane. In 2016, she apologised for remarks made on a flight from Cancun to Los Angeles, stating she had mixed alcohol with medication, which caused her to black out.

Blair is known for her roles in Cruel Intentions (1999), Legally Blonde (2001) and Hellboy (2004). She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018 and has since been an advocate for disability rights. In 2023, she joined then-president Joe Biden at the White House to mark the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
