Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was captured in 2003 and has been held at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp since September 2006. He previously entered a plea agreement that would have spared him the death penalty, but a federal appeals court overturned that deal last summer.

Prosecutors had sought to begin proceedings in 2027, yet a military judge deemed that schedule too soon. The case against Mohammed and three co-defendants is now set to commence on 5 June 2028.

Investigators believe Mohammed first conceived the idea of seizing planes and crashing them into American buildings, a proposal he reportedly brought to Osama bin Laden in 1996. The al-Qaida leader backed the plot, and Mohammed subsequently helped coordinate the attack.

The 2001 attacks killed 2,977 people.
