Amazon Driver Charged With Felony Elder Abuse After Gas Station Assault

Surveillance footage from an ARCO Gas Station in Elk Grove, California shows an Amazon delivery driver sucker-punching a 71-year-old man from behind on March 30 — a confrontation that erupted over a parking space, NY Post Metro reports.

The suspect, identified as Terrence Wheeler, 30, of Antioch, faces charges of felony elder abuse, felony criminal threats, and misdemeanor battery, according to Sacramento-area station KCRA. The video shows Wheeler, dressed in an Amazon jacket, aggressively confronting the elderly victim and threatening to "beat [his] a–" before striking him and knocking him to the ground.

Attorney Tony Buzbee, who represents the victim, released the footage and described Wheeler's behavior as "hyper-aggressive." His client subsequently sought treatment for neck pain and a concussion. Buzbee filed a civil lawsuit on behalf of the elderly man against both Wheeler and Amazon in the Superior Court of California, Sacramento County.

"We believe the Amazon driver has a history of violence," Buzbee said. He called on the company to improve its vetting procedures: "Amazon delivery folks must be carefully screened and trained. Amazon must do better in the hiring process. When Amazon fails, like here, it must be held accountable."

An Amazon spokesperson told ABC News that Wheeler was not a direct employee of the company but worked through an independent contractor that handled package deliveries on Amazon's behalf. After completing its own investigation, Amazon shared its findings with that third-party contractor and banned Wheeler from delivering Amazon packages.
