Google News MT — Crime (en) reports that a man was arrested on Sunday after allegedly threatening to kill a woman and shooting at police officers near Manzanita Park in East Oakland, according to the Oakland Police Department.

Officers received multiple 911 calls at 10:30 a.m. reporting that a man was threatening to kill a woman at the park. When police arrived, the suspect immediately opened fire on them. Officers returned fire, and the suspect fled into the surrounding neighbourhood. The woman was rescued and taken to safety.

Oakland PD established a command centre and set up a perimeter around the Manzanita Park neighbourhood. Authorities located the suspect at an abandoned home in the 2600 block of 22nd Avenue.

Just before 3 p.m., the situation escalated sharply. "During that process he started throwing flammable cans, that he lit on fire, at police officers, and he lit the building that he was in on fire," Oakland Police Department Chief James Beere said. "The officers had to emergency deploy smoke, to get him to exit the building, at which point our canine-tactical team took him into custody."

The suspect resisted as officers attempted to detain him after he exited the burning structure. He was transported to an Oakland hospital for injuries sustained during the arrest.

Beere said investigators believe the gunman was known to the woman rescued by officers.
