Armed man shot dead by Chandler Police at Dobson and Warner intersection

A 22-year-old man waving a gun near a Chandler intersection was shot and killed by police on Thursday. No officers or bystanders were injured.

Google News MT — Crime (en) reports that Chandler Police fatally shot a 22-year-old man who was observed waving a gun near the intersection of Dobson and Warner roads on Thursday afternoon.

Officers were dispatched to the area at approximately 3:30 p.m. on 27 August following reports of a suspect brandishing a firearm. Upon arrival, two officers identified the man as Romero Anthony Hernandez and witnessed him holding a gun and pointing it in multiple directions.

"The officers gave multiple commands to drop the weapon, which Hernandez ignored," the Chandler Police Department stated. "This is when one officer fired a single round, striking Hernandez and causing him to drop his weapon."

Officers immediately initiated life-saving measures at the scene. Chandler Fire Department personnel subsequently transported Hernandez to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators recovered one firearm beside Hernandez and a second weapon found on his person.

The officer who discharged his weapon has been with the Chandler Police Department for approximately three years. No officers or bystanders sustained injuries during the incident.

In accordance with East Valley Critical Incident Response Team (EVCIRT) protocol, the Mesa Police Department has assumed responsibility for the investigation into the shooting.
