Body discovered in trash can at Third Ward complex triggers homicide probe

Houston police launched a homicide investigation after officers found a body inside an overturned trash can at an apartment complex on the 3100 block of Anita Street shortly after midnight on Sunday, fox26houston.com reports.

Officers arrived at 12:13 a.m. following a 911 call reporting gunshots and a person attempting to stuff a body into a trash can. Because the caller had blocked their number, police were unable to call back for further details. No witnesses were present upon arrival.

While searching the parking lot of the small apartment complex, officers located the overturned trash can with the body inside. The cause of death and the nature of the injuries could not be immediately determined.

"It was hard to tell the kind of trauma that was done," a police official said during a briefing. "We couldn't tell if it was gunshot or blunt trauma or anything yet."

During a sweep of the property, officers discovered blood trails leading to a nearby residential unit. A man inside the unit refused to comply with commands to exit, prompting officers from the department's Patrol Support Team to use breaching equipment to force entry and take him into custody.

Police are currently questioning that man along with a second individual. Both are considered persons of interest. No official suspects have been named.

Homicide investigators remained on scene examining the body and processing evidence, according to the Houston Police Department.
