Worcester murder-suicide: body of suspect Karen Solomon discovered in woods
Google News MT — Crime (en) reports that Worcester police have recovered the body of Karen Solomon, a woman wanted in connection with the death of her husband, Kurt Solomon, a long-serving city police officer.
Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier told reporters Monday afternoon that two employees at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital on May Street called police after discovering a body in the woods near the facility. Responding officers also found a handgun close to her body. The weapon was not a police service firearm, Saucier said, and investigators have not yet established who owned the gun.
The discovery ends a week-long search that began when Worcester police found Kurt Solomon dead inside his own home on Tuesday. The department almost immediately asked the public for help locating Karen Solomon, cautioning that she might be armed. Authorities had previously released surveillance footage showing her approximately half a mile from where her body was later found. By Saturday, police had obtained a warrant for her arrest on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
"We believe this case is a tragic murder-suicide that occurred, and we still have plenty of work to do as far as wrapping up all the pieces to this," Saucier said.
Saucier also read a statement from the Solomon family, which thanked multiple federal, state and local law enforcement agencies for their assistance. "The nightmare of the past week has left our family heartbroken and rudderless," the statement said. The family added that those who had offered prayers and sympathies "helped us through each minute of the day."
The Office of the Medical Examiner will make the formal identification of the body and determine the time and manner of death, according to Saucier.
Karen Solomon had authored two books on mental health for law enforcement families. Kurt Solomon was a military veteran who served more than three decades as a police officer. A wake is scheduled for Tuesday at Our Lady of the Angels Church, with the funeral to follow on Wednesday.
