Bronx School Worker Stabbed to Death by Man with 13 Prior Arrests

A New York City schools worker was stabbed to death and his companion repeatedly slashed during an attack on a Bronx street Wednesday afternoon, NY Post Metro reports.

Rashaun Shettlewood, 32, a paraprofessional with the city's Department of Education, was knifed once in the chest around 3:30 p.m. at the corner of Davidson and West Tremont avenues in Morris Heights. His 33-year-old friend was stabbed multiple times in the torso at the same location, police said.

Both men were transported to St. Barnabas Hospital. Shettlewood, who lived approximately a mile from the scene, was pronounced dead from his injuries. His companion was listed in stable condition, according to authorities.

The attack originated from a dispute, though law enforcement sources told NY Post Metro on Thursday that the exact nature of the altercation remained unclear. It was also unknown whether the alleged attacker was previously acquainted with the two victims, who were friends with each other.

Police arrested the suspected assailant, Jeffrey Jorge, 37, of Brooklyn, at around 6:30 a.m. Thursday — roughly 15 hours after the stabbing — after officers located him carrying a knife at Ocean Avenue and Parkside Avenue in the Prospect-Lefferts Gardens neighborhood.

Jorge was charged with murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, and two counts each of assault and criminal possession of a weapon, the NYPD said.

Court records show Jorge has 13 previous arrests. His most recent, in May 2022, was connected to a stabbing that had occurred in January of that year — at Davidson and West Tremont avenues, the same intersection where Wednesday's fatal attack took place. That victim, a 44-year-old man, survived and was hospitalized in stable condition.

Jorge's record also includes a December 2018 arrest for allegedly menacing a person with a knife at 174th Street and Grand Avenue; he reportedly bit an arresting officer while resisting custody during that incident, authorities said. The outcomes of his prior cases were not immediately available.

His arraignment on the murder charge was still pending Thursday evening.
