California couple extradited from Mexico for fatal beating of Clovis teacher

Married couple charged in death of Clovis educator found hiding in Mexico

A married California couple has been extradited to the United States after US Marshals arrested them in Mexico on homicide charges, NY Post Metro reports — more than eight months after a Fresno County teacher was beaten to death near a canal.

Geoffrey Bernardi, 37, a career technical education instructor with the Clovis Unified School District, was attacked on Dec. 18, 2025, in Clovis. He died of his injuries two days later.

Investigators identified Antonio Garcia, 40, of Tulare, and Misty Gomez, 32, of Dinuba, as suspects. Both had been living in Mexico at the time of their arrest. Authorities said Gomez had been dating Bernardi at the time of the attack while she remained married to Garcia.

Bernardi's mother, Erin Adams, said her son had met Gomez online and dated her for just two months, with no knowledge that she was already married.

"[Gomez] was a very, very accomplished liar," Adams told YourCentralValley.com. "I can't even imagine hitting somebody. And to be so violent and to be so conniving and to have a husband that my son didn't know that she had… she lied."

Investigators noted that Gomez was the only witness to the attack and described the suspect as wearing a black puffer jacket with a hoodie. By January of this year, detectives had concluded the assault was not random and had identified a person of interest.

Following Bernardi's death, Gomez took her two children from a previous relationship and went to Mexico, authorities said. Clovis police confirmed that 9-year-old Skye Mason and 12-year-old Castiel Hernandez had been reported missing from Dinuba since April. The children were found in the custody of the Desarrollo Integral de la Familia — Mexico's national family development agency — in Michoacan, ABC 7 reported. Both children have different fathers and will be reunited with their respective families with the assistance of Child Protective Services.

Garcia and Gomez were extradited to the US last week. They were booked at Santa Rita Jail in Alameda County on $1 million bail each before being transferred to the downtown jail in Fresno.
