A 28-year-old man from Monterey has been charged with murder following a fatal stabbing in Castroville early Sunday morning, cbsnews.com reports. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office confirmed the arrest on Monday.

Deputies responded just after 2 a.m. Sunday to the intersection of Merritt and Preston streets, where they found a man with an apparent stab wound. The victim, identified as Flores Ruiz, 30, of Seaside, was treated at the scene before being transported to hospital, where he later died.

Detectives identified Robert Lee Jeffrey, 28, of Monterey, as a suspect. Around 5 p.m. Sunday, investigators located Jeffrey on Hannon Avenue in Monterey and took him into custody without incident. He was booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $1.02 million.

The sheriff's office has not disclosed a possible motive or whether Jeffrey and Flores Ruiz were known to each other.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed or heard anything near Merritt and Preston streets during the early hours of Sunday to come forward. Residents and businesses in the area are also urged to review surveillance and doorbell-camera footage for material that could assist the investigation.
