Death row inmate back at Tennessee prison after failed execution

Christa Pike has been transferred back to the Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center after surviving Tennessee's attempt to execute her by lethal injection, her attorneys announced Saturday, according to nbcnews.com.

Pike, 50, was discharged from the hospital where she had been held since the failed execution on Sept. 30. She had received two doses of pentobarbital as the state attempted to carry out her sentence for the 1995 beating and stabbing death of classmate Colleen Slemmer.

"She is grateful to the first responders and her medical team for their care in these extraordinary circumstances. She is continuing to receive medical care at the prison, and we will continue to track her recovery," her attorneys said in a statement.

The Death Penalty Information Center identifies Pike as the first person to survive after receiving lethal injection drugs during an execution attempt. She had been housed at the women's facility for 30 years prior to the execution date.
