A driver was shot and killed by law enforcement on Highway 50 in Sacramento County early Tuesday morning, cbsnews.com reports, after a vehicle pursuit ended on the freeway's shoulder west of Hazel Avenue.

The chase began on Folsom Boulevard, where California Highway Patrol officers followed a Volvo before it merged onto westbound Highway 50. Officers deployed spike strips on multiple occasions during the pursuit; CHP confirmed at least one attempt was successful.

The driver eventually pulled onto the shoulder and exited the vehicle. Authorities said the driver produced what appeared to be a gun, at which point officers opened fire. The driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP, Citrus Heights police and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office all participated in the operation, which unfolded around midnight. Authorities have not disclosed which officers discharged their weapons or how many shots were fired.

Westbound Highway 50 was closed at Hazel Avenue through the morning as investigators worked the scene, with significant traffic delays reported. The freeway reopened shortly after 9 a.m.
