Drunk driver kills 82-year-old in Coral Gables bedroom after Ritz-Carlton night out

A 67-year-old Florida man drove his 2025 Cadillac Lyriq through the exterior wall of a Coral Gables home shortly before 7:30 p.m. on June 24, killing 82-year-old Henri Bezy, who was asleep in his bed when the vehicle came to rest on top of him. According to Law & Crime, Allen Matis had a blood alcohol concentration nearly three times the legal limit at the time of the crash.

Matis is charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide.

The crash occurred at the intersection of SW 57th Avenue and SW 29th Street. Matis was traveling on 29th Street when he allegedly ran a stop sign at 57th Avenue without braking. Data retrieved from the vehicle showed he was traveling approximately 43 mph at the moment of impact and never applied the brakes, according to a probable cause arrest affidavit.

Bezy was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy concluded he died of blunt force trauma and traumatic asphyxia.

Officers who responded said Matis appeared intoxicated. Three blood samples taken in the hours following the crash recorded BAC readings of .290, .262, and .245 — well above Florida's legal limit of .08.

During a bond hearing Thursday, prosecutors argued Matis should remain detained. A prosecutor told the court, citing a report from local ABC affiliate WPLG, that Matis had voluntarily disclosed he had been at a Ritz-Carlton before the crash. "He got so drunk at that location that he must have driven right past his own home," the prosecutor said.

A judge denied bond. Matis faces another hearing on Friday.
