A 28-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Jaymirus Stewart, 29, on Byron Street in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, wafb.com reports.

The Baton Rouge Police Department arrested Darren Cooks on Thursday evening, 15 October, and booked him into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. The shooting had occurred nearly a week earlier, just before 6 p.m. on Saturday, 10 October.

According to arrest records, Stewart was conducting a transaction with the rear passenger-side occupant of a vehicle when shots were fired from inside the car. The driver sped away while Stewart was hanging outside the rear passenger door. He fell to the ground, attempted to run, and collapsed near a nearby home.

Officers responding to the scene found Stewart suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The U.S. Marshal's Office located Cooks on 15 October. Agents attempted to pull over the vehicle he was travelling in, but Cooks led them on a brief pursuit before stopping, fleeing on foot, and entering a private residence. The owners of the home — who investigators say had no prior knowledge of Cooks — fled outside. According to the arrest report, Cooks allegedly asked someone remaining inside the house whether he could hide in the attic and instructed that person not to speak with police. Marshals subsequently took Cooks into custody.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 225-344-7867.
