Google News MT — Crime (en) reports that the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, charged with killing her three young children at the family home in Massachusetts, is entering its final phase of testimony after nearly a month in court.

The central question before jurors has been Clancy's mental state at the time of the killings. Defence lawyers argue she was suffering from acute postpartum psychosis — a rare psychiatric condition that can follow childbirth — and therefore was not responsible for her actions.

Forensic psychologist Kirk Heilbrun, hired by prosecutors to assess Clancy's psychiatric history, told jurors on Monday that he believed she strangled the children so they would not "suffer" after she took her own life. Heilbrun said he did not accept the defence claim that Clancy heard a hallucinated voice instructing her to kill the children.

Defence attorney Kevin Reddington is set to cross-examine Heilbrun on Tuesday. Prosecutors are then expected to call at least one further expert witness before the case moves to closing arguments, which are not expected before Wednesday.

Earlier in the trial, medical experts called by the defence testified that Clancy had lost her grip on reality due to postpartum psychosis, and bore no criminal responsibility for her actions. In the months preceding the killings, Clancy had sought treatment from multiple mental health providers and had voluntarily admitted herself to a psychiatric hospital.

Prosecutors counter that Clancy, a former labour and delivery nurse, planned the killings deliberately. They say she arranged for her husband to leave the house by sending him to collect medicine for one of their children and to pick up dinner for the family.

After killing the children, Clancy jumped from a second-floor window. She has been paralysed from the waist down since that night.

Clancy, 36, has pleaded not guilty to murder charges in connection with the deaths of Callan, Dawson and Cora Clancy in January 2023. The children were aged between eight months and five years old.
