Miami Man Held Without Bond After Near-Fatal Stabbing Attack on Sleeping Wife

A 75-year-old Miami man is facing attempted felony murder charges after allegedly stabbing his wife in the back while she slept and then dragging her outside by the hair as emergency crews arrived, Law & Crime reports.

Pratapsinh K. Thakor was taken into custody this week and charged with one count of attempted felony murder causing injury and one count of domestic battery causing harm. The incident occurred on Sept. 1 at approximately 1 a.m. at the couple's apartment in the 1400 block of Northeast Miami Gardens Drive.

According to a probable cause affidavit, deputies from the Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported domestic violence incident at the address. The affidavit states that Thakor entered the couple's bedroom "without being provoked" and "began stabbing [his wife] in the back while she slept."

"Once the victim woke up, she begged for the defendant to stop," the document states.

The victim fought back and managed to take the knife from her husband. Thakor then continued the assault by "punching her with a closed fist about her body," according to the affidavit. His wife was able to break away long enough to call 911.

When first responders reached the scene, they found the victim on the ground outside the apartment. Thakor was reportedly "holding the victim by the hair" at that moment. A "lethal cutting instrument" was recovered from the scene.

Emergency medical personnel transported the woman to Florida Aventura HCA Trauma Hospital. Medical staff documented a punctured lung, two lacerations to the left side of her back, a laceration to her left arm, and a bloody mouth.

After being taken into custody, Thakor made an unsolicited statement in which he "denied any involvement" in the attack, investigators said. No motive had been established as of the initial reports.

Thakor was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. At a Wednesday bond hearing, a judge ordered him held without bond. His next scheduled court appearance was not immediately confirmed.
