Florida Man Drove 100 MPH Wrong-Way, Sideswiped Car With Passenger Trapped Inside

Tampa-Area Man Arrested After 100 MPH Wrong-Way Chase on U.S. 41

Law & Crime reports that Johnathan Porubcan, 38, is facing charges of aggravated assault, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and false imprisonment following a high-speed pursuit near Tampa, Florida that reached 100 mph.

The incident began around 10:30 p.m. Thursday when Florida Highway Patrol troopers spotted Porubcan driving a Ford F-150 at 91 mph on I-75. When troopers attempted to pull him over, he refused to stop and exited the highway.

Porubcan then accelerated to 100 mph, ran multiple red lights, and drove the wrong way down the road. During the pursuit south on U.S. 41, he sideswiped another vehicle — footage released by troopers confirmed the collision. Troopers attempted two PIT maneuvers, neither of which succeeded. At one point, Porubcan allegedly tried to ram a police cruiser directly.

A passenger inside the truck repeatedly pleaded with Porubcan to stop and let her out. He refused.

"I got this," he allegedly told her, according to the arrest affidavit.

The chase ended when the truck, too damaged to make a turn, crashed into a ditch. Porubcan fled on foot and was found hiding in nearby grass, where troopers arrested him.

Cops noted signs of intoxication: Porubcan was sweating heavily and had vomited. He later admitted to consuming three shots of whiskey mixed with Coke and smoking marijuana earlier that day.

Porubcan complained of rib and wrist pain and was transported to a hospital. There, troopers attempted a field sobriety test, but he refused to open his eyes or stand up.

"My f—ing ribs are broken, I'm not sitting up," he said, per the affidavit.

He also declined to provide a blood sample.

"F— you," he told the trooper. "Why would I give you s—?"

Porubcan is currently held at the Hillsborough County Jail without bond. No court date has been listed.
