Fresno Woman Charged After Highway Rampage with Children Onboard

A 41-year-old Fresno woman faces felony child endangerment and DUI charges after allegedly fleeing a collision and leading police on a chaotic highway drive with two juveniles in her vehicle, NY Post Metro reports.

Brooke Smith was first sought in connection with a crash near Shields and Fowler avenues in Fresno at approximately 6:07 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, according to the Fresno Police Department.

Officers subsequently located her vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 180. A police helicopter tracked the car from above and observed it speeding, driving along the shoulder, tailgating, and sideswiping another vehicle.

The pursuit ended when Smith's car struck a guardrail near the Blackstone and Abby Avenue exit.

One of the juvenile passengers climbed out of the wreckage and ran toward an officer seeking help. That child had visible head injuries. A second juvenile reported pain from the crash, police said.

The relationship between Smith and the two children was not disclosed by authorities.

Officers at the scene said Smith smelled strongly of alcohol, was slurring her words, and could barely stand. She allegedly showed signs of impairment consistent with both drugs and alcohol.

Smith was arrested on suspicion of DUI involving drugs and alcohol, reckless driving, hit-and-run, and felony child endangerment. She was booked into the Fresno County Jail.
